When I'm traveling to a new place I pay attention to the location of the sunset and the sunrise. The lighting at these two times of day always produces such interesting results.
It's hard to beat the appearance of sunrise or a sunset over the ocean. This makes a coastal destination one of my favorite travel spots. No matter how tired I am in the morning, I'll set the alarm and get up early to chase a good sunrise! Here's one from Balestrand, Norway.
In urban locations, sometimes you can catch a cool sunset where you don't expect it. The sun rising or setting over a cityscape provides some very interesting visual opportunities. In the case below, I was in Chicago walking along the lakeshore, when this quiet moment presented itself.
I like sunrises and sunsets because they are visual reminders of the promise of a new day. I've created a series of inspirational images using some of my favorite sunrise or sunset images. Here's one from Hawaii, where Janet and I got up super early once to witness the sunrise from the Haleakela volcano. Enjoy!
