This Gallery features images that are part of an ongoing series entitled, Unfixed.
In the standard film developing process, there are three basic steps:
1) Convert the silver chemically to a dark form (basically, developing the image)
2) Stopping the development, so that the whole film doesn't turn black
3) "Fixing" the image by removing unconverted silver, otherwise, the images on the negative darken over time with exposure to light.
For this series, I either skipped step three - as if to ask, "What if we do nothing to fix it?" - or I let the film darken, and then tried to fix it after the fact, in order to salvage the negative, asking, "Can't we just fix it later?"
The images show the defects when you don't fix the film at all, or when you try to fix it after the fact. This stands as an allegory for such modern-day societal ills such as climate change, or sexual abuse: What if we do nothing to fix it, and can't we just fix it later?
